Default Machete !!!

No, not the movie character.... LOL

Ages ago I bought a machete at Popular Surplus. It said US Army on the blade. I always thought it was a cheap machete (I didn't pay a lot for it), but the grip was ok, and the blade did a good job. I did wrap the handle with braided dacron fishing line for a better grip, and I really liked it. The grip fit my hand, and the blade had enough beef to chop with.

I had it for years, but somewhere along I let it slip away.

Of course when I needed one I went to Popular Surplus and bought another one. I HATED IT. The grip hurt my hand. The blade was more like a spring than a blade. It would take a chopping edge, but a days work would dull it end to end. Actually it wouldn't do a day's work because the horrible SPROOOOONG every time you hit something with it would numb your arm in an hour. The handle would raise blisters even quicker. I've bought two or three other inexpensive machetes and I pretty much hated them all.

Finally a couple years ago I found one I really like. I'll be back later to tell you about it.

Interesting. Sounds like you should have kept the first one. I had a knife I lost and I sad and angry with myself as it was my favorite at the time.

I've been meaning to pickup a Tramontina. They are cheap enough and high carbon steel. Always good to have a beater machete.

Bob sounds like the first one a us army issued one. What you describe sounds like the hd 18" Ontario. I have one with the US stamp and the od green nylon sheathe. Another cheap alternative I really like for the price is the SOG sogfari khukri machete, it's kind of a pos, but it holds and edge well and is quite rigid with a comfy handle.

Default Apples Vs Oranges

There you go. Cheap discount machete (still cost me more than that old US Army one that walked away) vs Condor Parang.

To be fair that particular discount machete has a better handle than the one I complained about it my first post. The Condor parang is no comparison though. I've spent half a day using it to trim trees and not raised a blister. I've had it for a few years now, and I am just now thinking about dressing the edge a little.
